After a week of heavy rainfall, Mumbai’s water stock situation has significantly improved, with all seven lakes that supply drinking water to the city now almost full. According to data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) at 6 am on August 21, 2025, the combined water stock in the lakes stood at 95.17% of total capacity.

The report shows that the seven reservoirs — Upper Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Vihar and Tulsi — together hold 13,76,785 million litres of water, compared with 12,11,685 million litres on the same date in 2023 and 13,67,683 million litres in 2024. This year’s storage level is thus higher than both previous years, when the levels were 83.72% and 94.49% respectively.

Bhatsa, Vihar and Tulsi have already reached 100% capacity, while Modak Sagar is at 99.65%, and Tansa at 99.56%. Upper Vaitarna and Middle Vaitarna are currently at 93.63% and 94.25% respectively. Officials noted that the steady rainfall in the catchment areas over the past week has rapidly boosted storage across the reservoirs, ensuring adequate supply for the city in the coming months.

With the monsoon still active and further rainfall expected, civic authorities are confident that Mumbai’s water security for the year is well within safe limits.
