Three suspected Bangladeshi infiltrators have been lodged at a newly established holding centre for illegal foreign nationals in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district, officials said on Tuesday.

According to administrative sources, the three individuals were shifted to the special detention facility after being identified as suspected illegal foreign nationals staying in India without valid documentation. Authorities said the holding centre was recently created in line with directives related to the management and deportation process of illegal immigrants and foreign prisoners awaiting repatriation.

Officials stated that the facility is designed to temporarily house apprehended foreign nationals until deportation procedures and verification processes are completed in coordination with central agencies and relevant authorities.

The development comes shortly after the West Bengal Home and Hill Affairs Department issued instructions to district administrations across the state to establish “holding centres” for apprehended foreigners and released foreign prisoners awaiting deportation or repatriation.

In its communication to district magistrates, the department referred to Union Home Ministry guidelines regarding procedures for handling illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya nationals found staying unlawfully in the country.

Authorities have not yet publicly disclosed the identities of the three detainees or details regarding when and where they were apprehended. Officials also said nationality verification and legal documentation procedures are currently underway.

Security arrangements around the holding centre have reportedly been strengthened, with local police and administrative officials maintaining surveillance at the facility.

Illegal immigration, particularly from neighbouring Bangladesh, has remained a politically sensitive and highly debated issue in West Bengal for several years. The matter has frequently triggered political confrontation between state and central leadership over border security, citizenship verification and deportation procedures.

Murshidabad district shares proximity with the international border region and has often remained under focus during discussions related to cross-border infiltration, smuggling and illegal migration networks.

The creation of dedicated holding centres is being viewed as part of broader efforts to streamline procedures involving detention, verification and deportation of illegal foreign nationals under existing legal frameworks.

Political reactions over the issue are also expected to intensify, especially amid continuing debates surrounding illegal migration and border management in eastern India.

Officials indicated that additional holding facilities may become operational in other districts in the coming months depending on administrative requirements and directions issued by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

Human rights groups in the past have raised concerns regarding detention conditions and legal safeguards for foreign nationals awaiting deportation, while security agencies continue to stress the importance of strict border monitoring and verification procedures.

Further details regarding the status of the detainees and deportation-related action are expected after completion of official verification processes.
