OpenAI’s ChatGPT appears to be facing technical issues for many users in the United States, with reports of partial and full outages surfacing across social media and Downdetector on Monday.

Despite the spike in complaints, OpenAI’s official status page continues to show “no current problems.” However, US users — especially those in New York City, Boston, Los Angeles and surrounding regions — say the AI chatbot is either not responding, failing to generate output, or not loading at all on both the website and the app.

What users are reporting

According to Downdetector charts, there has been a sharp rise in complaints over the last two hours. Nearly 90% of the reports relate specifically to ChatGPT, while a smaller number mention issues with other OpenAI tools.

On X (formerly Twitter), users shared screenshots showing error messages such as “Hmm… something seems to have gone wrong” and “ChatGPT entirely non-functional.”

Several users also mentioned failures in:

  • Response generation
  • Access to GPT projects
  • Custom GPTs not loading
  • MacOS ChatGPT app crashing

What OpenAI says

OpenAI has not yet acknowledged any outage on its status dashboard, and no official statement has been released so far.

Is ChatGPT down right now?

While OpenAI hasn’t confirmed an outage, real-time reports strongly indicate that ChatGPT is experiencing disruptions for many US users. The issue could be regional, temporary, or linked to server instability.

What you can do

Until OpenAI updates its status page, users can:

  • Try switching networks (WiFi to mobile data)
  • Use the web version if the app fails (or vice versa)
  • Log out and log back in
  • Check Downdetector for live updates

More updates are expected as the situation develops.
