Workers and leaders of the Indian National Congress staged a major protest outside the office of the Director General of Police (DGP) in Bhubaneswar on Monday, demanding strict action over the alleged mob lynching of Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel and raising concerns about the deteriorating law and order situation in Odisha.

The demonstration witnessed large participation from Congress workers, who gathered near the police headquarters carrying party flags, banners and placards criticising the state government over recent incidents of violence. Protesters accused the administration of failing to maintain public safety and sought accountability from officials over the killing of the GRP personnel.

Senior Congress leaders addressing the gathering claimed that the incident reflected a serious breakdown of law and order in the state and demanded immediate arrests, a transparent investigation and stronger protection for police personnel and public servants.

According to party representatives, the protest was organised in response to growing public concern over violent incidents and alleged administrative inaction in recent weeks. Demonstrators also questioned the state government’s handling of security-related issues and urged authorities to take stricter preventive measures against mob violence.

Security was tightened around the DGP office during the protest, with additional police personnel deployed to maintain order and prevent clashes. Barricades were placed near the protest site as Congress workers raised slogans against the government and submitted memorandums demanding action.

The incident involving the GRP personnel has triggered political debate in Odisha, with opposition parties targeting the state administration over public safety concerns. Congress leaders alleged that attacks on law enforcement personnel indicate increasing lawlessness and weakening governance mechanisms.

Police officials have not publicly disclosed complete details regarding the circumstances surrounding the lynching incident, but investigations into the matter are ongoing. Authorities are reportedly examining eyewitness accounts, forensic evidence and local intelligence inputs as part of the probe.

The protest in Bhubaneswar comes amid broader political efforts by opposition parties to highlight issues related to crime, governance and administrative accountability in the state. Congress leaders stated that further agitation could be organised if strict action is not taken against those responsible.

Odisha has witnessed several political confrontations in recent months over issues including public safety, infrastructure concerns and administrative functioning. The latest protest has intensified pressure on the state government to respond firmly to the incident.

No major violence was reported during Monday’s demonstration, though traffic movement in parts of central Bhubaneswar was affected temporarily because of security arrangements and crowd gatherings near the DGP office.

Authorities have appealed for calm while assuring that the investigation into the killing of the GRP personnel is being carried out seriously and that those responsible will face legal action.
