Parliament Winter Session Day 1 LIVE: SIR protests erupt for third time, Lok Sabha adjourned till 11 am tomorrow

For the third time today, the Opposition’s persistent protest over the SIR issue brought Lok Sabha proceedings to a halt. With slogans continuing and no truce in sight, the House has now been adjourned till 11:00 am on December 2, 2025.

After the earlier adjournment, the Lok Sabha has resumed proceedings, but disorder continues as Opposition MPs remain in protest mode. Slogans and disruptions persist inside the House, preventing smooth conduct of legislative business as the Winter Session’s first day remains tense.

The Opposition rushed to the well of the Lok Sabha, shouting slogans and hooting in an attempt to halt proceedings and force an adjournment. MPs continued disrupting the House, alleging they were not being allowed to raise constituency issues. The chaos led to a massive ruckus over the SIR matter, following which the Lok Sabha was adjourned at 12 pm.

Members of the INDIA bloc, led by Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, raised slogans of “tanashahi band karo” inside the House as the Winter Session got underway. Opposition MPs stood in protest, accusing the government of authoritarian conduct while disrupting early proceedings.

Opposition MPs began protesting inside the Lok Sabha right from the start of the Winter Session, leading to visible disruption in the House. Lawmakers were seen standing, raising slogans, and crowding the aisles as proceedings commenced. The Speaker continued with the scheduled business even as protests intensified on the Opposition benches.

The Lok Sabha opened the Winter Session on Monday with Speaker Om Birla presiding over the House as proceedings formally began. Marking the start of the 15-day session, Mr. Birla initiated business by reading out obituaries of members who passed away between the previous and current sittings of Parliament.

The Winter Session has commenced in the Rajya Sabha, with newly appointed Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan presiding over the proceedings. This marks his first day in the Chair as the Upper House begins its scheduled business.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the frustration among newly elected MPs who, he said, are not getting adequate opportunities to raise constituency issues or speak on matters of national importance. He urged all parties to ensure first-time MPs receive fair time to contribute meaningfully during the session.

Modi added that some parties are “unable to digest the defeat,” remarking that despite the time since the Bihar results, “defeat has troubled them,” based on recent statements from Opposition leaders.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has moved an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha, calling electoral roll vulnerabilities a “grave national concern.” He warned that irregularities in voter lists threaten the foundation of free and fair elections, adding that the credibility of the electoral system now depends on modernising how voter lists are prepared.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, in a post on X, expressed hope that all Members of Parliament will uphold the “healthy traditions of our democracy” and contribute actively to ensure a productive and meaningful Winter Session. His message comes moments before the session formally begins.
