Rohit Sharma remains at the heart of Mumbai Indians’ ambitions as they gear up for the IPL 2026 season, with the veteran opener aiming to once again lead from the front with the bat. Their pre-season camp began on March 16 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, with the franchise’s IPL 2026 campaign kicking off on March 29 against Kolkata Knight Riders at the same venue.

In IPL 2025, Sharma played 15 matches, scoring 418 runs at a strike rate of 149. His batting was often deployed in an Impact Player capacity due to fitness management, but he still delivered when it counted most — including a blazing 81 off 50 in the Eliminator against Gujarat Titans. With 7,046 IPL runs to his name, Rohit is the second-highest run scorer in IPL history, behind only Virat Kohli’s 8,661. His experience and match-reading ability continue to be invaluable for the Mumbai franchise.

Mumbai Indians finished 4th last season, with Suryakumar Yadav finishing as MI’s top scorer with 717 runs, while Trent Boult finished the campaign with 22 wickets. Mumbai Indians boast a strong core, but their title hopes will hinge on consistent contributions from the top order.

Rohit Sharma’s leadership legacy is already etched in IPL history. He guided Mumbai Indians to five titles between 2013 and 2020, establishing one of the most dominant eras in the tournament. While he no longer captains the side, his influence within the squad remains immense.

Mumbai head coach Mahela Jayawardene recently highlighted Sharma’s preparation and commitment. “He has done a lot of work behind the scenes. He looked very good in the nets. This is a newer version of Rohit — much fitter and very committed,” Jayawardene said at a press conference.

With no injury concerns, Mumbai Indians appear well-balanced. The squad boasts match-winners across departments, including captain Hardik Pandya, India’s T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav, and pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. Rohit, who is contracted with MI through 2027, will be looking to deliver on the biggest stage once again. At around 38 years of age, these remain among his most important IPL seasons.

As Mumbai Indians chase a record sixth franchise title — currently tied with Chennai Super Kings at five — fans at Wankhede Stadium will be ready to chant “Mumbai Cha Raja” once again. All eyes will be on Rohit Sharma to deliver on the biggest stage.
