Chelsea have reportedly stepped up their search for a new manager, with former Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso now emerging as a leading candidate for the role at Stamford Bridge.

According to reports from The Athletic, Chelsea are exploring the possibility of appointing the Spaniard as their next head coach after the recent departure of Liam Rosenior.

Rosenior was relieved of his duties just a few days ago following an underwhelming run of results. Soon after his exit, Callum McFarlane was placed in interim charge as the club began an extensive search for a permanent replacement.

Chelsea’s hierarchy are believed to admire Alonso’s tactical approach, leadership qualities, and his ability to develop young players. The former midfielder enjoyed a hugely successful spell in Germany, where he guided Bayer Leverkusen to major domestic success and established himself as one of Europe’s brightest young coaches.

The report adds that Alonso is open to the possibility of managing Chelsea, which has given the West London club encouragement in their pursuit. However, no agreement has been reached at this stage, and discussions are still understood to be at an early phase.

At the same time, Andoni Iraola also remains a serious option for Chelsea. The Spanish coach has impressed with his attacking style of football and continues to be highly rated by the club’s decision-makers.
