Liverpool FC head coach Arne Slot has strongly defended the club’s heavy transfer spending this season, insisting that the £450 million investment was both necessary and smart when viewed in full context.

Speaking candidly about the criticism surrounding Liverpool’s transfer activity, Slot stressed that the narrative often ignores the money the club generated through player sales. “Nobody ever looks at the circumstances,” he said. “I have tried 450 times to say we also sold for £300m, but that never comes across, and people never talk about it.”

The Dutch coach expressed frustration with how headlines continue to focus solely on the figure spent rather than the overall balance of transfers. “In general, I only ever see ‘£450m spent, 450, 450, 450’, which was all good investment. They are great football players who will be a big success,” Slot added.

Slot also highlighted that Liverpool were forced into the market after losing several important players. According to him, some departures were unavoidable and came at relatively low fees. “The reality of this season is we sold for £300m, some starters like Trent for only £10m. We had to recoup the money with players,” he explained.

The Liverpool boss believes the current squad will justify the club’s spending over time. While some signings have already started delivering on the pitch, Slot admitted others may need patience before showing their full potential. “Some already now and some in the future,” he noted.

For Slot, the message is clear: Liverpool’s £450m was not reckless spending, but a calculated response to losing key players and reshaping the squad for future success.
