In one of the most controversial finals in recent memory, Senegal edged hosts Morocco 1-0 after extra time to claim the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title in Rabat, but the match will be remembered more for its chaos than the triumph itself.

The drama at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium erupted deep into stoppage time of normal play. After Senegal had a late goal ruled out following a defensive foul call, VAR awarded Morocco a penalty in the 98th minute, prompting a furious reaction from the Senegal camp. Most of the visiting players, under the direction of head coach Pape Thiaw, walked off the pitch in protest, leaving only captain Sadio Mané to convince them to return minutes later.

When play finally resumed, Moroccan talisman Brahim Díaz stepped up, but his Panenka-style penalty attempt was comfortably saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, much to the delight of the away supporters.

Just four minutes into extra time, Senegal midfielder Pape Gueye struck a stunning left-footed effort into the top corner to break the deadlock and secure the title, Senegal’s second AFCON crown in three editions.
