Amid rising global tensions and growing concerns around energy supply disruptions, the Government of India has clarified that there is no proposal under consideration to impose a lockdown in the country.

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, addressed the issue in a post on X (formerly Twitter), dismissing circulating rumours as false. He stated that “rumours of a lockdown in India are completely false” and emphasised that no such proposal is being considered by the government.

The panic around a potential lockdown appears to have emerged after remarks by Narendra Modi in Parliament, where he referred to the possibility of a “Covid-like situation.” However, the Prime Minister did not indicate any plans for a lockdown. His remarks were understood to highlight potential risks of disruption and shortages in essential goods if global supply chains remain impacted, particularly due to the ongoing tensions and concerns around the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Puri noted that the government is closely monitoring developments across energy, supply chains, and essential commodities on a real-time basis. He added that under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, necessary steps are being taken to ensure uninterrupted availability of fuel, energy, and other critical supplies across the country.

He further urged citizens to remain calm and avoid spreading misinformation, stating that attempts to create panic during such times are irresponsible and harmful.

The statement aims to reassure the public that while global uncertainties persist, there is currently no plan for any restrictive measures such as a lockdown in India.
