The death toll in the Delhi Red Fort car blast has risen to 10, with over 20 others injured, according to official updates from LNJP Hospital and Delhi Police sources. Several of the injured remain in critical condition, and authorities have warned that the casualty count may rise further.
The explosion, which occurred around 6:52 PM on Monday near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station, ripped through a Hyundai i20 car and set multiple nearby vehicles ablaze. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a “massive bang” followed by flames and debris scattering across the area.
Police Commissioner Satish Golcha confirmed that the blast occurred when a slow-moving vehicle halted at a red light, causing a chain reaction that damaged nearby cars. He added that all major agencies, including the NIA and FSL, are on-site investigating the cause of the explosion.
Forensic teams have recovered metallic fragments, explosive residue, and circuit components, raising suspicions that an improvised explosive device (IED) was used. Officials have not ruled out the possibility of a terror-related motive, though investigations are ongoing.
Home Minister Amit Shah has briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and directed central and state security agencies to ensure heightened vigilance across Delhi, NCR, and Uttar Pradesh, which are now on high alert.
The Delhi Metro remains operational, though multiple metro stations, including Red Fort, Chandni Chowk, and Kashmere Gate, have increased security screening. Traffic around the Red Fort and Daryaganj areas continues to be restricted.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos following the explosion. “When we saw someone’s hand on the road, we were absolutely shocked,” said a local resident, speaking to ANI.
As of now, ten people have lost their lives, including pedestrians and bystanders. The injured are being treated at LNJP Hospital, with medical officials confirming that four remain critical.
