Strong tremors were felt in Guwahati city after a 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck Assam at 4:41 PM on Sunday. The quake’s epicentre was reported 16 km from Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur district, but the impact was widespread across the state.
Residents of Guwahati said they experienced sudden jolts lasting a few seconds, with many rushing out of homes and offices as a precaution. The tremors were powerful enough to shake buildings in several parts of the city, causing panic among locals.
While no immediate reports of damage or injuries have emerged from Guwahati, authorities are monitoring vulnerable structures and have urged people to remain alert against potential aftershocks.
The Northeast region of India, including Assam, lies in a high seismic zone and is prone to moderate-to-strong earthquakes. Today’s tremors are a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity.
