A terrorist was killed and an Army Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) injured in an encounter that broke out on Monday morning in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, security officials confirmed.

The gunfight began after security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation in the Gudar forest area based on intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists. The operation escalated into an encounter when the militants opened fire on the forces’ positions. Reinforcements have been rushed to the site, and the operation is still underway.

NIA raids across multiple states

Earlier in the day, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) carried out searches at 22 locations across five states and Jammu and Kashmir as part of its probe into a terror conspiracy case.

The raids were concentrated in Baramulla, Kulgam, Anantnag, and Pulwama districts, and are aimed at dismantling networks suspected of being linked to terrorist activities. Officials said evidence gathered during the searches will aid ongoing investigations.

Heightened counter-terror operations

The parallel developments — the NIA’s coordinated raids and the Kulgam encounter — underline a significant escalation in counter-terror efforts across Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities are stepping up both investigative and operational measures to crack down on terror networks and prevent infiltration attempts.
