The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Gujarat and Rajasthan on Monday, September 8, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts. A yellow alert has also been sounded for Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Arunachal Pradesh, forecasting heavy showers today.
Delhi rains bring some relief
The capital is expected to witness a partly cloudy sky with light rain or thundershowers, according to IMD. The maximum temperature is likely to remain between 34°C and 36°C, while the minimum is expected to hover around 23°C to 25°C.
Meanwhile, after days of concern, the Yamuna River water level fell below the danger mark of 205.33 metres on Sunday night. At 10 pm, officials recorded the level at 205.32 metres, ending a six-day-long period above danger levels.
Punjab reels under flash floods
Punjab continues to face the brunt of monsoon fury, with at least 46 deaths reported so far. Floods triggered by heavy rains have destroyed food crops across 40-50 villages, while several districts remain submerged. The Indian Army has been deployed for rescue operations, distribution of relief material, and medical support.
Gujarat faces waterlogging, disruptions
Heavy rainfall has also lashed Gujarat in recent days, particularly Vadodara, where areas such as Subhanpura, Tarsali, and Vadsar faced waterlogging on September 6. Authorities shut down a stretch of Koteshwar Road after water levels in the Vishwamitri River rose. The IMD has predicted extremely heavy falls in Kutch, warning of further disruption.
Himachal’s monsoon damage deepens
According to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), Himachal Pradesh continues to battle severe infrastructure loss. As of Sunday evening, 824 roads including two national highways remain blocked, 1,480 transformers are disrupted, and 336 water supply schemes are non-functional. The cumulative seasonal death toll has climbed to 366, including 199 rain-related deaths and 167 in road accidents.
Yellow alert in Uttarakhand
In Uttarakhand, heavy rainfall is predicted in Dehradun, Pauri, Bageshwar, and Nainital districts, where a yellow alert is active. IMD forecasts light to moderate showers with isolated heavy spells on September 8, 12 and 13.
Rajasthan braces for severe showers
The Meteorological Centre, Jaipur has warned of heavy rains and thunderstorms in south-eastern and western parts of Rajasthan over the next 48 hours. Officials say this could increase the risk of floods, waterlogging, and landslides.
