Kolkata is set to witness significant traffic disruptions today, April 4, as multiple protest events and processions are scheduled across the city. The Kolkata Police has issued a traffic advisory highlighting key locations and timings where traffic may be impacted. The situation comes on the heels of a strong political protest led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

According to the advisory, a protest meeting is expected to start at 1 PM on CIT Road and Surawardi Avenue, followed by processions at 2 PM and 3 PM affecting roads such as College Street, Bidhan Sarani, Vivekananda Road, Sealdah Flyover, and M.G. Road. A final rally is expected at 4 PM on CR Avenue, which may cause congestion in the heart of the city.

Traffic Advisory Details for April 4:

Time Event Type Roads Likely to be Affected
13:00 Hrs Protest Meeting CIT Road, Surawardi Avenue
14:00 Hrs Procession College Street, Bidhan Sarani, Vivekananda Road
15:00 Hrs Procession Sealdah Flyover, M.G. Road, College Street
16:00 Hrs Rally CR Avenue

The disruption aligns with the Trinamool Congress’ statewide demonstrations against the Centre’s recent move to hike prices of over 700 essential medicines and increase the GST on medical insurance. CM Mamata Banerjee condemned the decision as “anti-people,” announcing protest rallies across every block and ward of Bengal on April 4 and 5 between 4 PM and 5 PM.

“This hike is unacceptable and affects the poor and middle class the most,” said Banerjee. She urged for an immediate rollback and confirmed that TMC MPs will raise the issue in Parliament. The protests, combined with planned processions, are expected to cause citywide delays.

Commuters are advised to avoid key stretches in central Kolkata and plan alternate routes accordingly.
