The tragic rape and murder of a 31-year-old junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata have sparked widespread outrage across the country. The accused, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, is now at the center of a major investigation. Incident Details
The horrific event took place on the night of August 8. According to the Kolkata Police, Roy visited two brothels in the city’s red-light district, Sonagachi, and consumed alcohol before returning to the hospital. CCTV footage later showed him entering and leaving the seminar hall, where the victim was eventually found dead.
Protests and Public Outcry
The incident has led to a wave of protests across India, especially in Kolkata. Demonstrators, including IT professionals, have taken to the streets of Sector V in Salt Lake, chanting slogans like “Justice for RG Kar” and “Justice for our sister.” The protests reflect the anger and demand for justice felt by people from various walks of life.
Investigation and Legal Actions
In response to the outcry, the West Bengal government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate financial irregularities at the hospital. Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the investigation into the rape and murder. The CBI is currently questioning Anup Dutta, an assistant sub-inspector who allegedly had close connections with the accused, Roy.

The protests have also extended to the medical community, with junior doctors in West Bengal going on strike. This strike has severely disrupted healthcare services in the state, adding to the urgency of resolving the case.
