In India, various categories of security are given to V.I.P.s who are vulnerable to life threatenings. Among them, the SPG security is given only to the Prime Minister and his immediate family members. It was formed after Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated in 1984. The security officers are armed with equipped with modern weapons like FNF-2000 assault rifles, automatic guns and some dangerous pistols like 17-M. The Prime Minister’s motorcade comprises a fleet of vehicles, the core of which consists of at least three armoured BMW 7 Series sedans, two armoured Range Rovers, at least 8-10 BMW X5s, six Toyota Fortuners/Land Cruisers and at least two Mercedes-Benz Sprinter ambulances. A Tata Safari ECM car also accompanies the convoy, besides many more escort vehicles.

Restrictions for the members of SPG:-

Members of the SPG are barred by the SPG Act, 1988, from contact with the media. They also can’t publish or collaborate the publication of any book, letter or other document.

Who gets SPG security in India?

The Prime Minister of India and his immediate family members residing with him in his official residence gets SPG security protection. Previously the Nehru-Gandhi family members would also get SPG protection but now that is reduced to Z plus security.
