Reliance Industries is reportedly in discussions with Chinese battery giant CATL and other global suppliers to procure components for battery energy storage systems, as the Mukesh Ambani-led conglomerate accelerates its clean energy ambitions.
According to reports, the talks are aimed at strengthening Reliance’s battery and energy storage capabilities while navigating China’s restrictions on the transfer of advanced lithium-ion battery manufacturing technology.
Reliance and CATL had earlier explored a possible technology transfer arrangement that could have enabled the Indian conglomerate to manufacture battery cells locally using CATL’s proprietary technology.
Mukesh Ambani has been aggressively expanding Reliance Industries’ presence in the renewable energy segment, with a focus on solar, green hydrogen, battery storage and integrated clean energy infrastructure.
The company’s upcoming Jamnagar energy storage complex is expected to become a major part of Reliance’s broader clean energy strategy and future manufacturing ecosystem.
Responding to the reports, a Reliance spokesperson told Economic Times, “Our company evaluates various opportunities on an ongoing basis.”
