The Supreme Court on Monday directed authorities to remove stray dogs from sensitive public places including hospitals, schools, bus stations, railway stations and sports complexes.

A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and NV Anjaria said stray dogs picked up from these areas must be shifted to shelters and should not be released back to the same locations.

The Court also directed that feeding of stray dogs on public streets should only take place at designated feeding spots identified by authorities.

The directions came in the Supreme Court’s suo motu proceedings concerning the growing stray dog issue and public safety concerns across the country.

Earlier, several animal rights groups and dog lovers had moved applications seeking recall of the Court’s earlier observations and interim directions in the matter. The bench had reserved its judgment on January 29 after hearing all parties extensively.
