Former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, in Dehradun after battling a prolonged illness. He was undergoing treatment at Max Super Speciality Hospital in Dehradun when he breathed his last, according to family members and officials.
The veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, popularly known as BC Khanduri, was one of Uttarakhand’s most respected political figures and had served the state as Chief Minister twice. His death has triggered an outpouring of tributes from political leaders, supporters, and citizens across the country.
What Was the Cause of BC Khanduri’s Death?
According to reports, Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri died after suffering from a prolonged illness. He had reportedly been unwell for several months and was admitted to a private hospital in Dehradun for treatment. His son, Manish Khanduri, confirmed the news of his demise.
Earlier this year, Uttarakhand Governor Gurmit Singh had also visited the hospital to inquire about Khanduri’s health condition, indicating that the BJP veteran had been under medical care for some time.
Who Was Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri?
Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri was born in Dehradun in 1934 and had a distinguished career both in the Indian Army and politics. A retired Major General, he later joined politics and became a senior BJP leader.
He served as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand from 2007 to 2009 and again from 2011 to 2012. Apart from state politics, he also represented the Garhwal constituency in the Lok Sabha and served as Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.
Khanduri was widely known for his clean image, disciplined leadership style, and efforts toward transparent governance in Uttarakhand.
