Renowned fashion designer and film costume designer, Manish Malhotra, is gearing up to step into the world of direction with his debut project. Embarking on this new journey, Malhotra has chosen to helm a biopic on the legendary actress Meena Kumari. The talented Kriti Sanon has been roped in to portray the enigmatic Meena Kumari on the silver screen. The film, reportedly backed by T-Series and produced by Bhushan Kumar, promises to bring forth the captivating life story of Meena Kumari, leaving audiences intrigued and eager to witness this highly anticipated cinematic endeavor.

Meena Kumari had an illustrious career spanning 33 years, transitioning from a child actress to an acclaimed adult performer. She graced the silver screen in over 90 films, leaving an indelible mark on Indian cinema. Tragically, she passed away at the young age of 38 due to cirrhosis of the liver, which was attributed to her struggles with alcoholism. Meena Kumari began her acting journey at the tender age of four, predominantly working in Vijay Bhatt productions such as “Leather Face” , “Adhuri Kahani”, “Pooja”, and “Ek Hi Bhool”. During the filming of “Ek Hi Bhool,” Vijay Bhatt gave her the name “Baby Meena.” She eventually adopted the name Meena Kumari in Ramnik Production’s “Bachchon Ka Khel”.

In 2021, it was announced that Manish Malhotra would venture into directing a musical film set against the backdrop of the partition. His close friend and filmmaker Karan Johar was slated to produce the project. However, unfortunately, the film did not materialize and remained unreleased. Undeterred, Malhotra has now shifted his focus towards directing the highly anticipated biopic on Meena Kumari, marking a new chapter in his directorial aspirations.
