Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel are undoubtedly one of the most iconic duos in Broadway history. As the original Elphaba and Glinda in Wicked, which debuted on Broadway in 2003, they forever cemented their names in theater history. The musical not only won three prestigious Tony Awards but also earned a Grammy nomination for its cast album. Fans of Wicked may soon get to see the dynamic duo together again, as Chenoweth recently teased a potential reunion.
At the opening night of Broadway’s Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends, Chenoweth shared with People magazine that she has a future project in mind where she might reunite with Menzel. When asked if she would share the stage or screen with her longtime friend, Chenoweth hinted, “I have one in mind, but I can’t say.”
The two actresses most recently made a cameo together in the Wicked movie, which stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda. Their appearance in the Emerald City scene was seen by fans as a passing of the torch from the original Elphaba and Glinda to the new cast members. Chenoweth and Menzel’s brief but meaningful cameo sparked excitement, leaving fans hoping for more collaborations between the two.
After watching the movie, Chenoweth couldn’t contain her excitement, posting online, “Oh my gosh I just saw the movie and I’m dying. I’m deceased, I’m actually dead, I’m not here. People are not going to be well when they see this film. It is so good, it is so special.” She went on to praise the performances of Erivo and Grande, calling them “amazing,” and commended the entire cast and director Jon Chu for their work. “The story is so wonderful, and Cynthia and Ariana are amazing. The whole cast is amazing. Jon Chu nailed it. I was so moved, emotional, happy, filled with joy. Please, everybody, go see Wicked, you’ll be blessed.”
With Wicked Part 2 set to release later this year, fans might just get another chance to see the beloved original Elphaba and Glinda share the screen once again, and who knows, it could be part of a bigger reunion for the duo!
