Bella Ramsey, who portrays Ellie on HBO’s The Last of Us, recently shared insights about their character’s evolution in the upcoming season. With a five-year gap between the first season and the second, Ramsey noted that Ellie has undergone significant changes. In an interview with Deadline on Saturday, April 5, the actor revealed that they wanted Ellie to have more depth, maturity, and emotional weight this time around.

Ramsey explained that while Ellie has grown tougher and developed more similarities to Joel (played by Pedro Pascal), she still maintains her core personality, including her signature sense of humor. “I think she’s a little harder, she’s a bit more like Joel… but also she’s still the same person,” Ramsey said.

Season 2 is expected to explore more tension between Ellie and Joel as they settle into the fortified city of Jackson, Wyoming. A recent trailer showcased Ellie confronting Joel, yelling, “You swore,” which hints at the emotional rift the two characters will experience. Ramsey also revealed that Ellie continues to grapple with the lie Joel told her at the end of the first season, which will play a major role in shifting their relationship moving forward. The actor admitted to feeling conflicted about having to act “cold” towards Pascal’s character, signaling the emotional complexities of the new season.

The actor teased that The Last of Us season 2 will be notably sadder than its predecessor, with the tone growing darker and more somber as the season unfolds. The cast and crew were reportedly surprised by the overwhelming positive reception of season 1, and Ramsey shared that the team was proud of their work. Since the series is based on a beloved video game, the creators aimed to strike a balance between honoring the original fans of the game while making the show accessible and enjoyable for newcomers as well.

The Last of Us season 2 is set to premiere on HBO and Max on April 13, 2025.
