PM Modi in a recent statement to PTI told that the government is committed to giving basic amenities to Dalits and other weaker sections. This statement comes at a time when two ‘Dalit’ girls were raped in the state of UP by people from other communities.

Two girls in different incidents in UP’s Hathras and Balrampur area, them being 19-years-old and 22-years-old respectively, were raped by people from different communities. These incidents have led to protests happening throughout India about Dalits being unsafe in India and the prevalence of deep-rooted caste-system in the present-day Indian society.

In recent developments in the Hathras rape case, Indian politicians like Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Rahul Gandhi and Derek O’ Brian were prevented from meeting the victim’s family and section 144 was imposed in the area to prevent media-personnel from entering the place. UP Police was also caught instigating the family to change their statement.

These incidents raise questions at the basic human rights that are provided to people which in this context were being denied to the victim’s family because of their ‘Dalit’ status.

Such a statement from PM Modi in this situation reflects the accountability of government for such happenings and the nation awaits to see these promises being fulfilled.
