The highly anticipated Malayalam film L2: Empuraan, starring Mohanlal and directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, opened to packed theatres on Thursday. As the second installment in the Lucifer trilogy, the film has captivated audiences with its gripping storyline and high-octane action. However, its political undertones have also sparked intense controversy, particularly among right-wing groups.

The film has been criticized for its alleged critique of right-wing politics and its subtle references to the Gujarat riots. On social media, some right-wing groups, including Sanatana Dharma-affiliated accounts, have labeled L2: Empuraan as “anti-Hindu.” They claim that Prithviraj deceived Mohanlal’s fans by inserting political messaging into the storyline. Despite these allegations, the BJP has chosen to remain neutral, stating that the audience should decide for themselves.

Meanwhile, the Congress and left-leaning groups have praised the film, interpreting it as a bold commentary on contemporary politics. Scriptwriter Murali Gopy, who has been credited as the ‘co-creator’ of the film alongside Prithviraj, has refused to engage with the controversy. “Everyone has the right to interpret the film in their own way. I will keep total silence on the controversy,” he told PTI.

The political firestorm has only added to the buzz surrounding L2: Empuraan, with discussions flooding social media. While some see it as a thought-provoking film, others view it as an unnecessary political statement. Regardless of the debate, the movie continues to perform well at the box office, proving that controversy often fuels curiosity and ticket sales.
