Rain Industries Limited, through its subsidiary Rain CII Carbon (Vizag) Limited, has announced the establishment of a new coal tar distillation facility in the Andhra Pradesh Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), located in Anakapalli, Andhra Pradesh. The facility is designed to process, blend, and upgrade pitch, catering to growing demand from industries like steel, graphite, and aluminum.

Key Project Details:

  • Phase I: Set to commence operations in the second half of 2025, this phase will cost an estimated USD 5 million and will have an annual capacity of 50,000 metric tons of pitch. It will primarily target the Indian graphite, battery, and aluminum sectors.
  • Phase II: Once completed, the second phase will expand capacity to approximately 200,000 metric tons per year using Rain’s modular distillation technology. This phase will utilize both domestic and imported coal tar and petroleum feedstocks.

Strategic Importance:

Gerard Sweeney, President of Rain Carbon Inc., emphasized that the project will capitalize on the booming Indian steel industry. By sourcing by-products from local steel plants, the facility will play a vital role in bolstering the company’s market presence and improving supply chain efficiency.

Environmental and Operational Readiness:

The company has secured necessary environmental clearances and approvals to begin construction. The project reflects Rain’s commitment to sustainability, with a focus on upcycling industrial by-products into high-value materials.

Outlook:

Rain Industries sees this development as a strategic step toward strengthening its position as a key player in India’s industrial ecosystem while addressing growing demand in emerging sectors such as batteries and advanced materials.
