Many Cobra Kai fans are wondering if Netflix will greenlight a seventh season of the show.

Netflix started releasing Season 6 of Cobra Kai on July 18, kicking things off with the first five episodes. This season is already making headlines because it’s divided into three parts. The second part will drop on November 15, and the third part is expected sometime in 2025.

Before Season 6 premiered, Netflix made it clear that this will be the final season of Cobra Kai. This means that the current season will wrap up the stories of some of the beloved characters from the iconic Karate Kid series. So, while fans are excited about the upcoming episodes, they’re also bracing themselves for the end of an era.

Why is Cobra Kai Ending with season 6?

Jon Hurwitz, the creator and showrunner of Cobra Kai, recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to clarify that the decision to end the series with Season 6 was made by the showrunners, not Netflix. He shared, “We’ve always wanted to end Cobra Kai on our own terms,” explaining that it was their choice to conclude the series:

“Netflix didn’t tell us it was the last season. We told them it was the last season. We’ve always wanted to end ‘Cobra Kai’ on our own terms and we are grateful we have the opportunity to do so.”

In a July 2024 interview with Gizmodo, Hurwitz confirmed that the final five episodes of Season 6 would serve as a grand conclusion, tying together the storylines from both the show and the original Karate Kid films. He hinted at a satisfying end for fans, with a blend of resolution and new beginnings for the characters:

“For the final five [episodes], it’s not only closing out ‘Cobra Kai’ as a series, but it’s digging all the way back to the Karate Kid movies. It’s a resolution for a lot of these characters and new beginnings for them as well in different ways. And it’s going to be a really fun, fulfilling final five episodes, I think, for fans of this franchise. If you’ve been a fan for just a few years now, or if you’ve been a fan for 40 years, you’re in for a real treat in the final five.”

Mary Mouser, who plays Samantha LaRusso, also reflected on the final season in an interview with Glamour. She spoke about how the cast and crew cherished their last moments together, saying:

“Knowing it was our final season was kind of a blessing because everybody took the time to enjoy every single minute. Even if we weren’t working and didn’t have to be on set, people came just to hang out, just to be there and be around each other. We enjoyed it for every minute. I shed many a tear, but many a happy tear as well.”

Will Netflix Ever Release Cobra Kai Season 7?

As of now, it remains uncertain whether Netflix will release a potential Season 7 of Cobra Kai. However, the streaming service has teased that “‘Cobra Kai’ never dies,” suggesting that there might be more stories to explore in the future.

While the continuation of the series on Netflix is unclear, the Karate Kid franchise is moving forward in a different direction. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a new Karate Kid movie is set to hit theaters on May 30, 2025. This upcoming film will feature a crossover between two significant figures in the franchise: Jackie Chan, who starred in the 2010 remake, and Ralph Macchio, known for his role in the original Karate Kid films and Cobra Kai.

In addition, Ben Wang, known for his role in American Born Chinese, has been cast as the lead protagonist in this new movie.

Ralph Macchio’s return as Daniel LaRusso in this film could provide opportunities for fans to see more of the Cobra Kai characters beyond the Netflix series. There’s also a possibility that some Cobra Kai characters might make cameo appearances in the movie.

Even though a Season 7 may not be forthcoming, Cobra Kai co-showrunner Hayden Schlossberg hinted in a September 2022 interview with GamesRadar that the creative team has many ideas for expanding the universe. Schlossberg mentioned, “We do have a place where it’s all going, but that doesn’t mean the world has to stop there. We have lots of ideas of continuing [the universe] and keeping the ‘Karate Kid’ vibes going through other stories and other shows and different formats for that.”

Ultimately, the future of any potential spin-offs will likely depend on how the characters’ stories conclude in Season 6 of Cobra Kai.
