Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit, who co-produced the film 72 Hoorain, has been given police protection after receiving death threats on social media as a result of the film’s several controversies. The film, directed by Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan, was released in theatres on July 7.
Pandit recently told a news outlet that he has been receiving threatening threats since he began marketing 72 Hoorain, and that he has submitted a letter to the police about it.
“Since the film was released today (Friday), the local police have provided me with security. I thank Mumbai Police for the protection. To be honest, I am not afraid of threats, I have been fighting terrorism in Kashmir since the past 35 years,” he told ETimes.
It should be noted that the film’s director had also received death threats and insulting remarks on his social media account. Haters threatened not just him, but also his mother with rape.
72 Hoorain is based on the purported promise of 72 virgins to males if they die for their religion and go to heaven. Pavan Malhotra and Aamir Bashir play the key roles.
The 72 Hoorain Controversy
The film has sparked outrage for allegedly demeaning and belittling religion. A few Kashmiri political groups have objected to the film’s depiction of terrorist brainwashing.
These political parties contend that the film’s narrative may promote negative stereotypes and misinterpret the complex dynamics. The politicians believe that the video presents an incomplete or inaccurate portrayal of the dynamics of religion.
Several lawmakers have accused the video of being a propaganda effort designed to incite hatred against a specific community.
