Madonna took to Instagram to share her side of the story, starting with the words, “Finally buried the hatchet!!!” She expressed how hurt she was over the years by Elton John’s public criticisms, particularly his remarks about her as an artist. In her post, she recalled how she had once admired him deeply, having seen him perform live back in high school. Despite the tension between them, Madonna acknowledged Elton John’s significant impact on her life and music career.

The roots of their feud trace back to the 2004 Q Awards when Elton John, while accepting an award, infamously criticized Madonna, calling her performance “lip-syncing” and suggesting that people who lip-sync in public should be “shot.” His comments were pointed enough that Madonna reportedly crossed him off her Christmas card list. The rivalry continued over the years, with Elton John’s husband, David Furnish, criticizing the Golden Globe win of Madonna’s song over Elton’s in 2012, claiming the awards had become less about merit.
