The New York Yankees want to bring back Cody Bellinger after his strong 2025 season. They are trying to sign him to a long-term deal. But things are not moving smoothly. Right now, the situation looks tense and uncertain.
Even so, the Yankees have not walked away. They still have an offer on the table and are pushing to make a deal happen. According to USA Today reporter Bob Nightengale, the Yankees have offered Bellinger a contract worth up to $160 million.
The offer is for 5 years and ranges between $155 million and $160 million. There are no deferred payments. That would pay Bellinger about $32 million per year over the next 5 seasons.
Bellinger, however, wants more security. He is reportedly looking for at least a 7-year deal. This difference in contract length is the main reason talks have stalled. Both sides are holding their ground as spring training gets closer.
Bellinger’s desire for a longer deal is not new. He has been clear about wanting long-term stability for years. This latest report only confirms what teams around the league already knew.
If years are the only issue, the Yankees would need to add about $64 million to match a 7-year contract at the same yearly pay. But there is also a chance Bellinger wants more money per year, not just more seasons.
Negotiations are also complicated by his agent, Scott Boras. Boras still has leverage because other teams are interested, including the New York Mets. That interest gives Bellinger options outside the Bronx.
For now, both sides remain stuck. The Yankees believe their offer is strong. Bellinger and his agent want more years and possibly more money. Until one side budges, the standoff is likely to continue.
