In a dramatic twist to the 2025 Formula 1 title race, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are set to be disqualified from the Las Vegas Grand Prix after post-race scrutineering flagged excessive plank wear on both McLaren cars.

Norris originally finished P2 behind Max Verstappen, while Piastri secured P4, extending Norris’ championship lead to 30 points. But FIA technical checks quickly placed both cars under investigation, with the matter referred to the stewards for a final ruling.

If the disqualification is confirmed, it would be one of the biggest turning points of the 2025 season.

How the disqualification changes the championship

If the FIA officially disqualifies both McLaren drivers:

Lando Norris loses 18 points (P2 finish)

Oscar Piastri loses 12 points (P4 finish)

Based on race points redistribution, Max Verstappen would gain +7 additional points because his rivals lose their results, and everyone behind moves up.

Updated points scenario (after DSQ):

  • Lando Norris’ lead reduces from 30 points to just 24 points
  • Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri become level on points
  • Piastri remains ahead of Verstappen in the standings
because he has more race wins (7 vs 6)

This sets up a three-way title fight with two races left and 58 points still available.

Updated Championship Standings IF Norris & Piastri are disqualified

Position Driver Team Points (After DSQ)
1 Lando Norris McLaren 408 → 390
2 Oscar Piastri McLaren 378 → 366
3 Max Verstappen Red Bull 366 → 366 (moves level with Piastri)
4 George Russell Mercedes 291
5 Charles Leclerc Ferrari 222
6 Lewis Hamilton Ferrari 149

Piastri stays ahead of Verstappen because of race-win countback.

Current Points Table (Before Disqualification)

Position Driver Team Points
1 Lando Norris McLaren 408
2 Oscar Piastri McLaren 378
3 Max Verstappen Red Bull Racing 366
4 George Russell Mercedes 291

What happens next?

The stewards are expected to issue a formal verdict soon. If both McLarens are officially disqualified, the championship enters its most explosive phase yet:

  • Norris’ title lead becomes fragile
  • Verstappen and Piastri enter a dead-heat battle
  • 58 points remain across the final two races

This could become one of the closest season finishes in modern F1 history.
