The government is moving quickly toward finalising potential relief for Vodafone Idea (Vi), with a crucial high-level meeting scheduled today, according to an NDTV Profit report.

As per the update, Cabinet Secretary T.V. Somanathan has called a meeting of senior officials from the Ministry of Finance and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to discuss Vodafone Idea’s adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues. The meeting is expected to take place today (Thursday), though the exact time has not been officially disclosed.

What will the meeting discuss?

The agenda centres around:

  • The scope and extent of Vi’s request for AGR relief

  • DoT’s revised proposal following the Supreme Court’s Nov 3 order which allowed the government to “comprehensively reassess and reconcile” all AGR dues

  • The possibility of finalising the quantum and structure of relief to be extended to the struggling telecom operator

This meeting gains importance as the government is expected to make a formal decision within days, as hinted recently by Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.

DIPAM meeting for Vodafone Idea cancelled? Here’s what we know

Why the urgency?

Vodafone Idea faces:

  • Rs 9,450 crore in additional AGR dues

  • Total AGR demand exceeding Rs 83,500 crore (as of March 2025)

  • A critical need for cash flow support to raise further debt and continue operations

Brokerage Citi said that excluding government dues, Vi’s leverage remains low, and AGR relief—along with improving cash flows—could ease fresh fundraising.

Market reaction

At 14:59 IST, Vodafone Idea shares were trading over 4% higher at Rs 10.55, with 1.02 billion shares changing hands on the NSE—well above Tuesday’s volumes.
