Balmer Lawrie & Co. Ltd has signed an agreement with GATX India Pvt. Ltd., India’s largest private railcar lessor, for leasing three rakes of BFNS 22.9t wagons. These wagons will be used to transport finished steel products from Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL), Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) over long distances exceeding 1000 km.
The agreement was finalized on 11th November 2024 at Balmer Lawrie’s Kolkata headquarters, with senior officials from both companies present. This agreement marks a significant step in Balmer Lawrie’s expansion into rail logistics, following their initial agreement with SAIL, RSP in September 2024.
Balmer Lawrie seeks to contribute to the growing rail logistics industry by serving the customer segments in the list of commodities allowed under the Liberalized Special Freight Train Operator (LSFTO) Scheme of Indian Railways. The company was looking to lease three rakes and has recently awarded the contract to GATX via a public tender.
