The Central government has directed the iconic Delhi Gymkhana Club to hand over its premises by June 5 after invoking provisions under the land lease agreement, citing “public purpose” and strategic requirements, according to an official order.
The development marks a major turning point for one of the capital’s most prominent and historically significant elite institutions located in the heart of Lutyens’ Delhi.
Officials familiar with the matter said the government has formally communicated its decision to reclaim the land occupied by the club, stating that the premises are required for broader public and strategic use.
The order reportedly directs the club administration to vacate and return control of the premises to the government within the stipulated deadline.
The Delhi Gymkhana Club, established during the British colonial era, has long been regarded as one of India’s most exclusive social and recreational institutions, frequented by senior bureaucrats, diplomats, military officers, politicians and business leaders.
Located on a vast stretch of prime land in central New Delhi, the club has historically enjoyed significant prestige due to its location, membership profile and colonial legacy.
The latest government move is expected to trigger major administrative and legal discussions given the institution’s long-standing history and influence.
Officials have not yet publicly detailed the exact strategic or public-purpose plans linked to the land reclamation. However, sources indicated that the action was initiated under clauses available in the original lease framework governing the property.
