Amazon India is close to finalising a deal to purchase 40-45 acres of land in Palava, near Mumbai, from Macrotech Developers (Lodha) for approximately ₹500-600 crore. The land will be used to establish a data centre for Amazon Web Services (AWS) focusing on generative AI applications. Sources with direct knowledge of the deal indicated that the agreement is expected to be completed in the coming months.

After the acquisition, Macrotech Developers will be responsible for building the data centre. Both Amazon India and Macrotech Developers declined to comment on the deal.

Generative AI represents an advanced form of artificial intelligence that enables organisations to create solutions that were previously unimaginable. Data centres for generative AI require more power, space, and cooling compared to standard cloud workloads. AWS, which holds a 31% global market share in cloud infrastructure, is a leader in providing cloud technologies for companies and institutions worldwide.

India is a crucial market for AWS, with the company having invested $3.7 billion in the country between 2016 and 2022. Amazon has also announced plans to invest $12.7 billion to expand its data centre infrastructure in India by the end of this decade.

AWS operates two data centre regions in India, one in Mumbai and another in Hyderabad, both designed to offer Indian customers more resilient and low-latency options for storing and processing data securely.
