Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and his bodyguard had been killed in an attack on his Tehran residence, according to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

According to the IRGC Public Relations Department, an investigation is being undertaken into the early Wednesday attack. The IRGC expressed its condolences to Palestinians, the Muslim world and the resistance front. Hamas blamed the attack on “Israeli” forces and claimed responsibility for Haniyeh’s murder.

The incident happened after Haniyeh met with Iran’s Supreme Leader on Tuesday and attended the inauguration of the country’s new president.

As per the statement on the IRGC’s Sepah news website, “The residence of Ismail Haniyeh, head of the political office of Hamas Islamic Resistance, was hit in Tehran, and as a result of this incident, he and one of his bodyguards were martyred.”
