Akon and his wife, Tomeka Thiam, have announced their divorce after 29 years of marriage, leaving fans around the world heartbroken. The couple has a 17-year-old daughter named Journey. According to reports, Thiam cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for filing for divorce and has requested joint legal custody of their daughter, while seeking primary physical custody. She has also asked for Akon’s visitation rights and spousal support, while requesting that Akon not be granted any claims in return.
Akon has previously spoken openly about polygamy, saying in a 2022 interview that both dating and marriage are real relationships in his cultural beliefs. He has nine children and has mentioned that even if he cannot attend every event or holiday, he ensures his family’s needs are taken care of.
The couple was close to celebrating their 29th wedding anniversary. Akon’s connection to Bollywood also made headlines, as he was introduced to the industry by Shah Rukh Khan.
