Denzel Washington didn’t let a brief run-in with a pushy photographer spoil his night at the 78th Cannes Film Festival on May 19. While attending the premiere of his new movie Highest 2 Lowest with director Spike Lee and co-star A$AP Rocky, a photographer grabbed his arm trying to get his attention. Denzel firmly told him to stop and pulled away before rejoining the group. Clips of the moment quickly went viral.
Despite the incident, Denzel’s team told E! News the night was still fantastic. Inside the theater, Denzel was honored with a surprise honorary Palme d’Or from Spike Lee, marking their first collaboration in 20 years. Visibly emotional, Denzel expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with Lee again and be at Cannes.
He said, “We’re a very privileged group that gets to make movies, dress up, and get paid for it. I’m blessed beyond measure. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all.”
Highest 2 Lowest also stars A$AP Rocky, Jeffrey Wright, Wendell Pierce, Ice Spice, and Ilfenesh Hadera. The film is a modern take on Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low and will release in US theaters on August 22, with streaming on Apple TV+ starting September 5.
