Despite what Miranda Priestley might say about things moving “at a glacial pace,” the highly anticipated sequel now has a release date. Multiple outlets have confirmed that The Devil Wears Prada 2 will hit theaters on May 1, 2026.
Yes, that’s less than a year away, and even though the cast hasn’t been confirmed yet, the excitement is very real.
The original film, which premiered in 2006, became an instant classic. Based on Lauren Weisberger’s bestselling novel, it starred Meryl Streep as the unforgettable and icy fashion editor Miranda Priestley, Anne Hathaway as her assistant Andy Sachs, Emily Blunt as the no-nonsense co-worker Emily, and Stanley Tucci as the stylish and supportive Nigel.
From killer outfits to iconic one-liners (“That’s all”), the film left a major mark on pop culture. Fans have been hoping for a sequel ever since, and now, it’s finally happening.
There’s still no word on the storyline or whether the original stars will return, but with the release date locked in, we’re officially counting down the days. Fashion lovers and movie fans alike, get ready, Runway is back.
So, is there any solid confirmation about the making of ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’?
Fans have been buzzing about a possible sequel for years, and now it’s finally happening. In July 2024, Puck News confirmed that a sequel to the beloved 2006 film is officially in development. Even better? Aline Brosh McKenna, who wrote the original movie’s script, is back to write the sequel.
According to Deadline, some familiar names from behind the scenes might be returning too. Producer Wendy Finerman and director David Frankel, both key players from the original film, are reportedly in talks to come back.
As for the cast, there’s no official word yet. Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci haven’t signed on (at least not publicly). But there’s good reason to believe that Streep and Blunt might return, based on the rumored storyline.
Variety reports that the sequel would follow Miranda Priestly (played by Streep) as she tries to keep her career alive during the fall of print magazines. She finds herself needing help from none other than Emily Charlton (played by Blunt), who is now a powerful executive at a luxury company controlling the ad dollars Miranda desperately needs. Sounds juicy, right?
Fans got even more excited when Streep, Hathaway, and Blunt reunited on stage at the 2024 SAG Awards. But when asked about a sequel in interviews, the cast had mixed feelings.
In April 2024, Anne Hathaway shared a rather cautious take on the possibility of a Devil Wears Prada sequel. In an interview with Extra, she advised fans not to get their hopes up, expressing doubt that a follow-up film would ever come to life. Around the same time, she also spoke to E! News, where she explained that she didn’t believe the original story needed a continuation, suggesting that the first film stood strong on its own and wrapped things up in a satisfying way.
Meanwhile, her co-star Stanley Tucci appeared to have a more hopeful outlook. In an earlier interview from October 2023 with PEOPLE, Tucci said he would be happy to reprise his role as the beloved Nigel if the opportunity arose. Although he admitted he hadn’t been given any information about the plot or official plans for a sequel, his positive attitude stood in contrast to Hathaway’s reservations. His comments added a touch of optimism to the ongoing conversation, hinting that at least some of the original cast might be open to returning if everything falls into place.
In December 2024, Emily Blunt offered one of the most encouraging updates yet about The Devil Wears Prada sequel. Speaking at the Red Sea International Film Festival, she hinted that there were “rumblings” about the project and shared that the cast “would all be delighted” to return. However, she stopped short of officially confirming that the sequel was happening.
Although no cast members have been officially announced and nothing is set in stone, it’s clear that progress is being made behind the scenes. With the original writer and key producers involved, and interest from some of the stars, there’s growing hope that fans could see Miranda, Andy, Emily, and Nigel reunite on screen in the near future.
