General Hospital is bidding farewell to one of its iconic characters, Nurse Bobbie Spencer, portrayed by actress Jacklyn Zeman for an impressive 45 years on the show’s 60-year run. However, Zeman’s unexpected departure was not a creative decision by the show but rather a consequence of her tragic battle with cancer, which sadly ended on May 9, 2023, at the age of 70.
Frank Valentini, the executive producer of General Hospital, announced Zeman’s passing, praising her as a “bright light and true professional” who brought positive energy to the set. Zeman’s portrayal of Barbara Jean, or Bobbie, since her first appearance in 1977, left an indelible mark on the soap opera’s legacy.
Zeman’s character, the spirited younger sister of Luke Spencer, became a beloved figure on the show. Off-camera, Zeman developed a close bond with Anthony Geary, who played Luke, considering him as close as, if not more than, family. Her final appearance as Bobbie occurred in April 2023, coinciding with her character’s grandson’s wedding and commemorating the show’s 60th anniversary.
Regrettably, Zeman passed away just two months later, marking a significant loss for General Hospital fans. Her time on the show spanned over a thousand episodes, earning her four Daytime Emmy nominations. Zeman had taken a hiatus in 2010 but returned in 2013 to reprise her role.
The General Hospital community endured additional losses within six months, mourning the deaths of Sonya Eddy in December 2022 and Nneka Garland in March 2023. In memory of Zeman, the show will broadcast two emotional tribute episodes on January 10 and 11, 2024, featuring past and present characters honoring Bobbie.
The farewell episodes will showcase a gathering of characters, including Maxie, Laura, Elizabeth, Scott, Carly, Finola Hughes, Lynn Herring, and Ryan Carnes. The cast shared heartfelt moments during the memorial scenes, with Laura Wright expressing the bittersweet experience of saying goodbye to both Bobbie and Zeman.
