The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) will be closed on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, in observance of Gandhi Jayanti. The national holiday marks the birth of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, a key figure in India’s independence movement, known for his principles of nonviolence and civil disobedience.
All trading activities, including equity, equity derivatives, and securities lending and borrowing (SLB) segments, will be halted for the day. The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will also remain closed for both trading sessions on October 2. Regular market operations will resume on Thursday, October 3.

On Tuesday, October 1, the Indian benchmark indices closed with a slight negative bias after a range-bound session:
- BSE Sensex: Closed at 84,266.29, down by 33.49 points (-0.04%)
- NSE Nifty50: Settled at 25,796.90, declining by 13.95 points (-0.05%)
Among the Nifty50 stocks, 29 ended lower, with IndusInd Bank, ONGC, Asian Paints, Bajaj Auto, and Tata Steel being the top losers. On the other hand, Tech Mahindra, Mahindra & Mahindra, Britannia Industries, Infosys, and Adani Enterprises saw gains of up to 2.90%. In broader markets, the Nifty SmallCap100 index rose by 0.79%, and the Nifty MidCap100 index increased by 0.34%.
On a year-to-date basis, the BSE Sensex has gained over 16%, while the NSE Nifty50 has risen approximately 18%.
Stock Market Trading Hours
Regular trading hours in the Indian stock market are from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday to Friday, with a pre-open session from 9:00 AM to 9:07 AM. The markets are closed on weekends (Saturday and Sunday).
