The Super Mario Bros. Movie earned $1 billion in revenue, while the PS-2 enters the Global Box Office

The worldwide box office for “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is expected to comfortably surpass $1 billion on Sunday, making it the 10th animated film to do so and the first since 2019. With a domestic total of $490 million thus far, overseas sales are much better. Over the weekend, the Illumination-animated release earned $68.3 million overseas, bringing its international total to $532.5 million.

It faced little new rivalry over the weekend, but that may change next week, when Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” starts off the summer movie calendar and is likely to push Mario to the sidelines.

“Evil Dead Rise” took second place. The Warner Bros. horror sequel did well in its second week, especially for a horror film, dropping 50% to $12.2.

The film “It’s Me, Margaret,” about an 11-year-old girl (Abby Ryder Fortson) going through puberty, drew a predominantly female audience. “It’s me, Margaret” should do well on Mother’s Day.

Ponniyin Selvan 2, Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus, has had a spectacular beginning at the box office, grossing over 150 crore in just three days worldwide. According to trade reports, the picture grossed $3.6 million (roughly 29 crore) in its first weekend in the United States.

One of the weekend’s biggest box-office successes had a familiar name. The rerelease of “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi” by The Walt Disney Company grossed $4.7 million in only 475 theatres. To mark the 40th anniversary of the 1983 film, Disney re-released “Jedi” (the 1997 special edition version) in theatres.
