The MTV Video Music Awards 2023 are almost approaching. In the words of this year’s top nominee, VMAs veteran Taylor Swift, “Are you ready for it?”
On September 12, silver sculptures of MTV moon people will be available for collection by a select group of today’s best musicians. For the second year in a row, the annual ceremony will return to New Jersey for what is guaranteed to be a night of daring performances, heartfelt acceptance speeches, and pivotal viral moments.
“Celebrating one of our biggest nights in music with the Garden State’s incredible fans has been our goal since last year’s highly successful event,” said Bruce Gillmer, Paramount’s president of music talent, in a statement.
MTV has revealed honorees and performers that will take the stage in the weeks leading up to this year’s awards presentation. Here’s what we know so far.
Where to watch the 2023 MTV VMAs?
For the second year in a row, the MTV Video Music Awards will be held in the Prudential Centre on September 12. The VMAs will be held for the third time in the Newark, New Jersey, venue this year.
MTV will air the VMAs live beginning at 5 p.m. Pacific. Viewers can also watch the show live on Paramount+.
Who will Host the 2023 MTV VMAs?
MTV has yet to identify who will host the 2023 VMAs. Last year, the network surprised everyone by announcing three new hosts: LL Cool J, Nicki Minaj, and Jack Harlow. Katy Perry, Jack Black, Doja Cat, and the show’s first presenters, Bette Midler and Dan Aykroyd, have all served as hosts.
Nominees for the 2023 MTV VMAs
Women dominated the top VMA categories this year, including video of the year and artist of the year. Swift and SZA received eight and six nominations, respectively, for the night’s top accolade.
Doja Cat, Kim Petras, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo, and Sam Smith each have five nominations.
Ice Spice, Peso Pluma, Lana Del Rey, Kendrick Lamar, Karol G, and Blackpink are among the other candidates.
Shakira was nominated four times and will win the night’s prized Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. She joins an elite group of VMA recipients who have previously received the Vanguard award, including Nicki Minaj, Britney Spears, Missy Elliott, Kanye West, Madonna, and Jennifer Lopez.
Performances for the 2023 MTV VMAs
MTV unveiled their initial lineup of performers on Tuesday. Demi Lovato, Karol G, Mneskin, and Stray Kids are among the acts who will perform at the Prudential Centre.
Shakira will take the stage at the VMAs for the first time in 17 years. More acts will be confirmed as the evening approaches.
