Borosil Renewables announces 50% capacity expansion in solar glass production

Borosil Renewables Limited, India’s largest and oldest solar glass manufacturer, has announced a 50% capacity expansion in solar glass manufacturing. This move will increase production from 1,000 tons per day to 1,500 tons per day, supporting the domestic solar industry’s growth.

The decision, approved by the company’s Board of Directors on December 18, 2024, follows the Ministry of Finance’s notification on December 4, 2024, establishing a “Reference Price” for imported solar glass. This measure targets cheap imports from China and Vietnam, which had disrupted the domestic market. The reference price, set at ₹143 per mm/square meter, ensures fair competition by acting as a minimum threshold for import prices.

Borosil Renewables had previously faced challenges due to the dumping of solar glass by Chinese-owned companies, which led to plummeting prices and soaring import volumes. The new pricing policy enables the company to achieve better margins, facilitating its expansion plans.

This capacity boost will strengthen India’s solar supply chain, offering domestic PV module manufacturers a reliable source of high-quality solar glass. With all necessary raw materials, manpower, and technology available within India, this move also reduces foreign exchange outflow and creates vital local jobs.
