CCI orders probe against Google as INS files complaint

The Newspaper Society has alleged that publishers of news were not being paid fairly for the content they produced on their digital platforms, even after heavily investing in the same. 

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has ordered proper against Google for abusing its dominant position. The Indian Newspaper Society had filed a complaint against Google.

“INS has stated Alphabet Inc, which is the parent company of Google, Google LLC, Google India Pvt Ltd, Google Ireland Ltd, and Google Asia Pacific were abusing their dominant position in the News Referral Services and Google Ad Tech Services in the Indian online news media market, which violated Section 4 of the Competition Act, 2002,” stated INS.

Several countries have directed search engines like Google to pay proper among to the news publishers. The European Publishers Council has also filed a complaint against Google for misusing its dominant position.

“The news media houses are completely kept in the dark on the total advertising revenue collected by Google and what the actual percentage of the advertising revenue is being transferred to media organisations,” the INS further stated.
