Union minister of street transport and highways Nitin Gadkari on Friday introduced the new financial hall between Delhi and Dehradun in Uttarakhand. The 210km six-lane specific freeway is scheduled to be accomplished by 2023 and as soon as completed the route will cut back the journey time from the national capital to Dehradun from five hours to two hours.

“Announced the new Economic Corridor of Delhi-Dehradun for Uttarakhand today. The total cost of this 6-lane project of 210 km total length is 12,300 crores. The project will be awarded by August 2021 and will be completed by 2023,” Gadkari tweeted in Hindi.

The Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor will provide new connectivity to the holy website of Haridwar in Uttarakhand. The new connectivity for Haridwar will likely be offered by the route passing via Basera, Manakpur, Khataferi, Roorkee, Mehberkalam.

According to the transport ministry, the Delhi-Saharanpur-Dehradun Economic corridor, which is currently under construction, is expected to be operational nearly two years from now. Here are key things you need to know about the Delhi-Dehradun expressway:

  • The new expressway will reduce the distance between Delhi and Dehradun by 235 kilometres to 210 kilometres and the travel time will reduce to 2.5 hours from 6.5 hours now. The expressway would allow a minimum speed of 100km/hour.
  • It will also have 10 elevated roads. This will be the first expressway in India to have a 12 kilometre long elevated corridor for protecting wildlife.
  • At every 25-30 kilometre on the expressway, wayside amenities will be placed to enhance the experience of the commuters. “Closed toll mechanism would be adopted to enable pay toll only to the extent of highway used,” the release mentioned.
  • Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday said construction work for the expressway will be awarded by June.
  • The expressway is expected to give a boost to tourism in Uttarakhand and will help improve the economy of the region.
