Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders is in focus after reports indicated that India and Germany are likely to sign a $10 billion Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) in March to clear the way for the long-pending Project 75(I) submarine programme. The deal is expected to pave the path for the construction of six next-generation conventional submarines in India, with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders as the execution partner.
Under the proposed agreement, the submarines will be built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders in collaboration with Germany’s Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems. The IGA framework is aimed at ensuring long-term technology transfer, government-backed support, and export clearances, addressing key concerns that had delayed the programme in earlier phases.
As per available details, the submarines under Project 75(I) will feature Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology, allowing for longer underwater endurance and improved stealth capabilities. The first submarine is expected to enter service nearly seven years after contract signing, reflecting the scale and technological complexity of the project.
While the final contract value has not yet been officially disclosed, estimates suggest the deal size could be around $10 billion, making it one of India’s largest defence procurement programmes. The project is also expected to significantly boost domestic shipbuilding, strengthen India’s submarine fleet, and enhance long-term manufacturing capabilities at Mazagon Dock.
The Indian Navy currently faces a shortage of underwater platforms, with several Kilo-class submarines nearing retirement. The induction of six advanced submarines under Project 75(I) is seen as critical to maintaining operational readiness and fleet strength in the coming decade.
With the government-to-government agreement expected to be finalised soon, Mazagon Dock remains at the centre of one of India’s most strategically significant defence manufacturing programmes.
