The death toll in the series of landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad district has climbed up to 143, with hundreds of others left injured and trapped. The natural calamity caused massive destruction to houses and roads, uprooted trees, and led to the water bodies to swell. Efforts to rescue and locate the trapped ones are still underway.
As per the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA), members of fire and rescue, NDRF, civil defense, and local emergency response teams are involved in the operation of locating and recuing. About 200 Indian Army personnel from DSC Centre Kannue and 122 TA Battalion from Kozhikode are also at the site.
Currently, over 120 injured people are receiving treatment at various hospitals in Wayanad.
Veena George, the health minister of the state, has informed that up till now, postmortem of 116 bodies have been completed.
Orange Alert has been issued by India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Wayanad and neighbouring districts, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall on July 31 and August 1.
