The veteran actor and politician Jaya Bachchan strongly objected after Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh called her by her husband’s name yesterday. “Shrimati Jaya Amitabh Bachchan ji, please,” said him to call her in the House. “Sir, sirf Jaya Bachchan bolte to kaafi hojata,” jaya bachchan respinded; meaning it would have been enough if you had called me Jaya Bachchan. Then, Harivansh Narayan Singh pointed out that she is officially registered as Jaya Amitabh Bachchan in the Parliament’s records. “Your full name was on this document and all I did was repeat that”, remarked Mr Singh.
“This is something new, that women will be recognised by the name of their husbands. They (women) have no existence or achievements of their own,” Ms Bachchan said.
Later, Ms Bachchan reminded the unfortunate passing of three UPSC candidates at a coaching centre in Delhi. “Really tragic and I don’t think we should allow this to turn into a political issue,” she said. Three students drowned in an inundated basement of a coaching institution based in East Delhi last week. This has caused unrest among students who point fingers at municipal incompetence for it. The BJP has started blaming the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government which rules over Delhi including multiple local bodies such as municipal corporations etc.
