Rumors are swirling among fans that CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077 could be making the leap from gaming screens to the silver screen with a movie adaptation, potentially starring none other than Keanu Reeves’ iconic character, Johnny Silverhand.

Reeves made a splash in the gaming world with his portrayal of the enigmatic rocker in the 2020 release of Cyberpunk 2077, bringing his trademark charisma and gravitas to the role.

Since the game’s launch, CD Projekt RED has expanded the Cyberpunk universe with a slew of DLC expansions, even tapping the talents of Hollywood heavyweight Idris Elba for one of them. Additionally, the studio has ventured into the realm of animation with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, a series on Netflix that further explores the gritty cyberpunk world.

With the success of Cyberpunk 2077 and its expanding universe, it’s not surprising that speculation about a movie adaptation is running rampant among fans. And with Reeves’ portrayal of Johnny Silverhand leaving a lasting impression, the prospect of seeing the character come to life on the big screen is undoubtedly an exciting one for many.

Is a Cyberpunk 2077 movie happening?

While excitement peaked with a recent trailer purportedly showcasing a live-action adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077 starring Keanu Reeves and Margot Robbie, it turns out fans will have to curb their enthusiasm. The trailer, posted on the KH Studio YouTube channel, was revealed to be a clever fan-made creation, splicing footage from Cyberpunk 2077, the John Wick franchise, and other major movies.

However, the realm of possibility for a live-action adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t entirely far-fetched. CD Projekt RED, the masterminds behind the acclaimed game, has officially announced a collaboration with Anonymous Content to bring a live-action project to fruition.

The studio confirmed in October 2023 that the project is still in its nascent stages, described as being “an early development stage” in an official press release. CD Projekt RED has set out to recruit a screenwriter to craft “a brand-new story” within the immersive world of Cyberpunk 2077.

While details remain scant, it’s unclear whether the adaptation will take the form of a movie or a series. However, the prospect of seeing the likes of Keanu Reeves and Idris Elba, two of the game’s most prominent celebrity faces, reprising their roles in the live-action project certainly adds to the anticipation. Whether they’ll assume lead roles or make cameo appearances, their involvement would undoubtedly heighten the excitement surrounding the project.

When will the live-action Cyberpunk 2077 project be released?

It seems the live-action adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077 is still in the embryonic stages, with the search for a screenwriter ongoing since its announcement in October 2023. Despite the passage of time, there’s been no official announcement regarding the appointment of a writer.

Given the intricate process of piecing together a compelling narrative, it’s safe to assume that even after securing a writer, CD Projekt RED and Anonymous Content will require ample time to flesh out the story before moving on to the casting phase and commencing production. As a result, it’s unlikely we’ll see any tangible progress or release before 2026 or 2027, though predicting an exact timeframe remains speculative at this juncture.

With development on Cyberpunk 2077 concluded and no further DLC releases planned, CD Projekt RED has shifted its focus to “Project Orion,” the highly anticipated sequel to the dystopian RPG. Meanwhile, the status of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the animated series on Netflix, remains uncertain, as there have been no indications of a renewal for Season 2, leaving the Cyberpunk universe in a state of hiatus.

For those eager to dive into the world of Cyberpunk 2077, the game is currently available on PlayStation and Xbox platforms, offering an immersive experience while awaiting further developments in its expansive universe.
